The city government of Taipei has announced it intends to close Songshan Airport within five years.

The airport is located in central Taipei and has caused headaches for architects and property developers due to the height restrictions placed on buildings surrounding it. The airport also came under scrutiny after TransAsia flight 235 crashed shortly after taking off, with critics suggesting that another crash could put many local residents in danger. Taipei’s vice mayor Charles Lin stated he expected the addition of two new terminals at Taoyuan airport – Taipei’s international hub – to absorb the overflow traffic from Songshan’s closure, and also announced plans to turn Songshan into a city park.
